A crown, usually called a cap, covers a weak or damaged tooth and protects it from breaking. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by fixing a false tooth between caps on the neighbouring teeth. Both are fixed in place, so you never take them out.
When a crown helps
- After a root canal treatment, especially on a back tooth
- A tooth that is broken or has a very large filling
- A tooth worn down by grinding
- A discoloured or badly shaped tooth you'd like to look better
When a bridge helps
When you lose a tooth, the teeth next to the gap slowly tilt into it and the tooth above or below drifts. Over time your bite changes and chewing gets harder. A bridge fills the gap using the teeth on either side for support. We'll also explain the other ways of replacing a tooth, so you can choose.
Choosing the material
We make crowns in tooth-coloured ceramic and in zirconia, a very strong, metal-free material. We'll help you choose based on where the tooth is, how hard you bite and how natural you want it to look.
What to expect
- 1 Preparing the toothThe tooth is numbed and shaped slightly so the crown can fit over it.
- 2 MeasurementWe take a measurement (impression) of your teeth and pick a shade that matches your own.
- 3 Temporary capYou usually wear a temporary cap while the final one is made in the lab.
- 4 FittingAt the next visit we check the fit and your bite, then fix the crown or bridge in place.
It usually takes two visits a few days apart.
Looking after it
- Brush twice a day, and clean under a bridge with floss or an interdental brush. We'll show you how.
- Don't bite on very hard things like ice or bones with the capped tooth.
- Come for regular check-ups so we can check the edges of the cap and the gums around it.
Common questions
How long does a cap last?
With good care, a cap usually lasts many years. It depends a lot on keeping the gums clean and on whether you grind your teeth.
Will the cap look different from my other teeth?
We match the shade to your natural teeth, and tooth-coloured caps are made to blend in.
Can a bridge be taken out?
No. A bridge is fixed to the teeth on either side, and you clean it like your own teeth.
कैप और ब्रिज के बारे में
कमज़ोर, टूटे हुए या RCT वाले दाँत को टूटने से बचाने के लिए उस पर कैप (क्राउन) लगाई जाती है। अगर कोई दाँत निकल चुका है, तो उसके दोनों तरफ़ के दाँतों पर कैप लगाकर बीच में नकली दाँत लगाया जाता है। इसे ब्रिज कहते हैं। दोनों फ़िक्स होते हैं, इन्हें निकालना नहीं पड़ता।
- RCT के बाद पीछे के दाँत पर कैप ज़रूर लगवाएँ, वरना दाँत टूट सकता है।
- हम दाँत के रंग की सिरेमिक और ज़िरकोनिया कैप बनाते हैं।
- आमतौर पर कुछ दिनों के अंतर पर दो बार आना होता है।
- ब्रिज के नीचे सफ़ाई ज़रूरी है। कैसे करें, यह हम आपको सिखा देंगे।
खाली जगह को ज़्यादा दिन ऐसे ही न छोड़ें। आसपास के दाँत खिसकने लगते हैं और चबाने में दिक्कत होती है।
