When a tooth is badly infected, patients often ask us why we don't just take it out. It seems quicker and simpler. Sometimes taking it out is the right call. Most of the time, though, saving the tooth works out better in the long run.
Why we try to save the tooth
- Your own tooth chews better than any replacement
- A gap lets the neighbouring teeth tilt and the opposite tooth drift, which changes your bite
- Replacing a missing tooth later with a bridge or an implant takes more time and more visits than a root canal and cap
- The bone under a missing tooth slowly shrinks
When extraction is the better option
- The tooth is broken below the gum line and can't hold a cap
- Gum disease has destroyed so much bone that the tooth is very loose
- The root has split
- It's a wisdom tooth that keeps causing trouble and isn't used for chewing
How we decide
We examine the tooth, check how firm it is and take an X-ray to see the roots and the bone around them. Then we explain both options, what each involves and what you'll need afterwards, and you decide.
If you have a painful tooth, don't wait for it to get worse. The earlier we see it, the better the chance of saving it.
